The Method, Restated
A strikeout prop carries two numbers and most analysis only argues about one of them. The line is the first. The price is the second, and the price is what decides whether a good opinion is a good bet.
The posted number this morning is 4.5 strikeouts, over at +124, with the under at -158, FanDuel, Boston Red Sox at Tampa Bay Rays, Tropicana Field, 10:40 AM PDT. A price of +124 needs to be right 44.64 percent of the time to break even. So the question is whether Patrick Sandoval has cleared 4.5 strikeouts more than 44.64 percent of the time. Not whether he should. Whether he has.
He has, by 30.36 points. That is the entire edge on the season log, and it is the widest gap among the fourteen listed starters on Sunday’s seven game card. Twelve starts is not a full season. The opponent is the quietest strikeout club in baseball. Both of those facts are on this page because they belong next to the 75.00 percent, not under it.
No projection appears anywhere on this page. The chart below is his 2026 game log, every start, unfiltered.

Nine greens and three reds. 75.00 percent against a break even of 44.64, a gap of plus 30.36 points. The three misses were 3 strikeouts against Toronto on July 24, 4 against Toronto on August 11, and 2 against Seattle on September 2. Everything else cleared, including a 2.2 inning start at Texas on September 15 that still produced 5 strikeouts.
The Shape Of The Season, In Order
Read the K column top to bottom. His last five starts produced 6, 7, 2, 7, 5 strikeouts, which clears this number in 4 of 5. The one miss in that window is the 2 strikeout night at Seattle on September 2, 4.0 innings, 20 batters faced. Volume was there. The whiffs were not.
The August 22 start against San Francisco is on this log as 5.2 innings and 6 strikeouts. This desk wrote him up that afternoon as an under 5.5 at even money. He went over. That is the record, and it is why today’s number is the over at a lower line rather than another attempt at the same under.
He is 1 and 6 with a 4.99 ERA and a 1.79 WHIP in 57.2 innings, 62 strikeouts, a 9.67 per nine rate. The earned run column is not the prop. The WHIP is, because traffic is the thing that ends a start at 14 batters instead of 23. His September 15 start at Texas is that mechanism in one line: 2.2 innings, 14 hitters, 4 earned runs, and 5 strikeouts anyway.
The Distribution
Hit rate alone hides the shape. Here is how his strikeout totals actually cluster.
The mass sits on 5 and 7. Mean 5.17. A line of 4.5 is set a half strikeout under his own average, which is what a 75.00 percent rate looks like from the inside. Four of the twelve starts landed on exactly 5, one punchout over the number and the thinnest kind of win.
He Has Already Faced This Lineup
Sandoval started against the Tampa Bay Rays on July 18 at Fenway Park and the strikeout column reads 5.
| Date | Park | IP | K | Result vs 4.5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026-07-18 | Fenway Park | 5.0 | 5 | OVER |
One start is a sample of one. It cleared this number and it did not clear 5.5. Tonight the park flips. He is the visitor at Tropicana Field, 10:40 AM PDT, opposite Griffin Jax.
The Opponent Strikes Out Least In Baseball
Tampa Bay strikes out in 18.55 percent of its plate appearances, 1078 times in 5810 trips, which ranks 30th of 30. The league figure is 22.09 percent. Against left-handed pitching the Rays drop further, to 17.81 percent, 326 strikeouts in 1830 plate appearances. Sandoval is a left-hander. Against a strikeout over, that is not a small headwind. It is the loudest one on the board.
This is the entire argument against the 75.00 percent. A pitcher can clear 4.5 against twelve other lineups and still fail against the one club that puts the ball in play more often than anyone else. The July 18 meeting says he can still get to 5. It does not say he will do it at Tropicana Field in September.
Home And Away
At Fenway Park he has cleared this number in 4 of 6 starts, 66.67 percent. On the road it is 5 of 6, 83.33 percent. Tonight is a road start.
The road column is the friendlier one, 5 of 6, and it includes the 2.2 inning Texas start that still cleared. Twelve starts split six and six is a real split with a small sample glued to it. It is being reported rather than leaned on.
The Rest Of The Sunday Starter Board
Fourteen listed starters on the seven games from this morning’s card. The main strikeout number is the line where FanDuel posted both sides, or the closest thing to it. Hit rate is the pitcher’s own 2026 starts against that number. Jonah Tong and Corbin Burnes are on the board with two starts each and are not measured.
| Contract | Price | Break even | Own log | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Patrick Sandoval over 4.5 K | +124 | 44.64% | 9 of 12, 75.00% | +30.36 |
| Sandy Alcantara over 3.5 K | -111 | 52.61% | 22 of 32, 68.75% | +16.14 |

| Hunter Brown over 6.5 K | +116 | 46.30% | 9 of 18, 50.00% | +3.70 |
| Jacob Misiorowski over 8.5 K | +110 | 47.62% | 14 of 28, 50.00% | +2.38 |
| Martin Perez over 3.5 K | +102 | 49.50% | 12 of 25, 48.00% | -1.50 |

| Gavin Williams over 7.5 K | -106 | 51.46% | 14 of 30, 46.67% | -4.79 |
Alcantara’s last five starts produced 6, 3, 2, 1 and 6 strikeouts, so the 22 of 32 season number is fighting a 2 of 5 window. Perkins last five: 2, 5, 7, 3 and 8. Warren last five: 5, 4, 7, 8 and 6, all over 4.5 except the 4. Those three rows are the second reads. They are not substitutes for the Sandoval number and they are not tracked units.
What Would Make This Wrong
The opponent being the real number. If 18.55 percent, last in baseball, describes tonight better than 9 of 12 describes Sandoval, the posted over is the trap. The July 18 meeting at Fenway went 5.0 innings and 5 strikeouts, which is the thinnest possible clear against this same club.
The leash. A 1.79 WHIP is how a start dies at 14 hitters. He has already done that once this month and still got to 5. Do it without the whiffs and the over is dead in the third inning.
Sample honesty. Twelve starts is a real file and a thin one. Treating 75.00 percent as settled evidence is reading a small number as a large one. The model of this desk is the log itself, and the log is twelve rows.
Bottom line for the desk: the season number clears the price by 30.36 points, which is a real edge and the widest one on this board, and it sits on only twelve starts against the lowest strikeout lineup in baseball. Four of five in the last window, 5 of 6 on the road, and one prior meeting with Tampa Bay that landed on exactly 5. The August 22 under 5.5 this desk published went 6 strikeouts and lost. Today the market moved the number down to 4.5 and priced the over at plus money. Analysis only, no play, no tracked units. Nima selects his own player props.
